KP Sharma

Biography

K.P. Sharma was born in Garhwal. He was inspired to take up mountaineering while serving in the Indian Navy, after the ascent of Everest by Tenzing and Hillary.
He Climbed Nandakot in 1959. His other mountaineering ventures have been to Annapurna III (1961), Everest (1962), Tharkot (1963), Rathkong (1964) and Trishuli East (1965). He retired from the Navy in 1965. Between 1963 and 1970 he served in the Mountaineering Institutes at Darjeeling and Uttarkashi, and was secretary of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation in the early 1960’s.
In 1970 he joined a leading Indian travel agency and when Ladakh was opened to tourists in 1975 he organised the first tour to Ladakh led by Heinrich Harrer. In 1983 K.P. set up Garhwal Adventure Pvt. Ltd. company at Dehra Dun to promote his native Uttarakhand.
