The Way of St James

The Way is a new film written and directed by Emilio Estevez, about a journey along the pilgrimage route the Way of St James.

In the film Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his son, killed in a storm while walking the Way of St James, or Camino de Santiago, as it is also known. Armed with his son’s backpack and guidebook, Tom walks the 800km pilgrimage from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela.

The Way was filmed along the actual pilgrim route. You can view clips of the film here. The Way is released in UK cinemas on April 15.

If the film fills you with inspiration, then don’t forget to pack the Cicerone guidebooks. Pilgrim route specialist Alison Raju has written our guides to walking the route – the first guide covers the route from Le Puy to the Pyrenees, and the second picks up the routes from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.

Alternatively we also have a guide for those planning to cycle the Camino de Santiago along good surfaces suitable for touring cyclists.
