Walk With Mark Richards

May 1st, 2013 in Cicerone Authors by Steph

Here at Cicerone we hope that our guidebooks are so expertly written, it’s like having the author alongside you as you complete one of their routes. But this summer, we’re going one step further (no walking pun intended…)

We’ve teamed up with Large Outdoors, a fantastic guided walking company, to bring you a series of three guided walks from our Lakeland FELLRANGER series. Not only will you be taken expertly from start to finish with the Large Outdoors team, but you will also be in the company of Mark Richards – author of the FELLRANGER series.

So if you’d like to meet the man himself, get an insight into why set himself the task of writing eight books about 227 fells, and how he went about completing it you’re in the right place. And what better place to hear about it than halfway up a mountain?

There’s three walks to choose from: High Street on 20th July, Catbells on 21st July, and Wansfell on 18th August. Don’t worry about the difficulty – Catbells in particular is suitable for the whole family to enjoy, and you’ll be in safe hands with Mark and the Large Outdoors team.

For full details of the walks, and how to book your place on them, please visit the Large Outdoors website. Happy walking!

Talks, Books and Bargains

April 22nd, 2013 in Cicerone Authors by Steph

It must be the start of the prime walking season in Britain, as walking festivals are starting to appear thick and fast across the country. And, as well as some great walking opportunities these are also a chance to meet some Cicerone authors.

This weekend Ulverston is the place to be, with both the Ulverston Walking Festival and the Backpackers Club weekend both commencing on 27th April and based at Ford Park.

The Ulverston WalkFest runs from 27th April to 6th May, with a variety of events and walks on offer. Part of the schedule is an Outdoor Trade Show, on Saturday 27th at Ford Park, where you will find a Cicerone stand and an opportunity to browse through some of our titles, as well as several other outdoor retailers. Look out for prolific Cicerone author Paddy Dillon, who is sure to in attendance throughout the week.

The Backpackers AGM is running just for the weekend of 27th and 28th April, but it is a packed two days. On the Saturday is your chance to hear author Mark Richards talk about his Lakeland Fellranger series; and with the final volume arriving in June, what better time to get a little inspiration from the man himself?

Finally, on the Sunday, the Backpackers have organised a table-top sale. This is the time to bag a bargain, with many of our ‘seconds’ – previous print runs or old editions – on offer at knockdown prices.

If you’re not near Ulverston, but find yourself in the north east of England, there is a festival for you too. The Haltwhistle Walking Festival has the exact same dates as Ulverston, and on 29th April features a talk by Paddy Dillon on the Reivers Way – a route which he knows so well he literally wrote the book on it!

Don’t forget, you can keep track of many walking festivals on our homepage – keep an eye on the Diary Dates section on the right hand side. If you know of a festival that we haven’t mentioned on there, be sure to let us know and we’ll be happy to add it to the list.

Mark Richards; Leading the Future of Fellwalking

March 10th, 2013 in Cicerone Authors by Steph

Exactly 40 years ago on 10th March, a young man called Mark Richards built a stone cairn on Hare Shaw above Haweswater, among the eastern fells of the Lake District. Mark was one of the very few people to have accompanied Alfred Wainwright on a fell walk; evidenced by a grainy photograph taken by him that day, which depicts Alfred and his wife Betty on the summit of the neighbouring Hugh’s Laithes Pike – the exact date is noted on page 228 of AW’s Pictorial guide to the Outlying Fells.

Alfred and Betty Wainwright, Hugh Laithes Pike, Haweswater 10 March 1973

Recently Mark visited the same outlying fells as he completed the research for his final guidebook in the new Lakeland FELLRANGER series, and so the ‘baton’ of comprehensive guidebooks to England’s most beautiful mountain landscape is carried into a new generation.

The Far-Eastern FellsThe Lakeland FELLRANGER series aims to inspire, rather than instruct – in Mark’s words, ‘to unleash the latent wandering spirit in each one of us’. In eight volumes, each of the 227 fell chapters describes a plethora of walking routes of differing characters and difficulties which can easily be combined to make ascents, descents, traverses or ridge routes.

Two further anniversaries occur this month; it is 40 years since the publication of Mark Richards’ first guidebook (The Cotswold Way), and the publication of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk, for which Mark Richards also accompanied AW during his original research.

The publication of Mark’s guide The Far Eastern Fells on 15 June 2013 marks the completion of the Lakeland FELLRANGER series.

Take a ride on the Lakeland Fellranger bus

April 19th, 2012 in Cicerone Authors by Sarah

It’s springtime in Grasmere and crowds flock to the lakeland village to see Wordsworth’s daffodils and sample the famous gingerbread. But today the town played host to a few more unusual visitors…

Cicerone author Mark Richards was in Grasmere this morning to see the newly painted Lakeland Fellranger bus.

A 559 Stagecoach bus has been named after Mark’s popular series of Lakeland Fellranger guidebooks to the Lake District, and painted with a new design to showcase the Cicerone guides and the fells they explore. It even has Mark’s face on the back!

The bus is part of Stagecoach’s ongoing effort to promote their Lakeland bus services as a great (and green) way to explore the fells.  Mark has long been an advocate of using public transport to access the area and many of the walks in his guides link up with handy bus routes.

He has been eagerly anticipating the bus’s launch and was over the moon to see the finished product, “On a personal level, to have a bus named after my eight-part Lakeland Fellranger series published by Cicerone Press is rather special… This tie-in with Cicerone brings into focus a symbiotic relationship these buses can and should have in the minds of active visitors and this amazing mountain landscape.” Said Mark.

After a morning spent posing for photos, the 559 went back to ferrying passengers up and down the scenic road from Bowness to Grasmere.

Mark also has a busy summer ahead of him – with 6 fellranger guides already out and another – The Northern Fells – due to be published later this year, he is busy exploring and writing for the final guide in the series, the Far-Eastern fells.

So if you’re lucky enough to be out and about in the Lake District this summer, keep an eye out for the Fellranger bus, you could even hop on for a ride!

Cicerone at Dales outdoors weekend

May 11th, 2011 in Cicerone Authors, Cicerone Office by Lesley

Cicerone were invited to support The Dales Outdoor Weekend held at Stanhope in deepest Weardale last weekend, so I went along, armed with a collection of guidebooks and the support of three authors, Paddy Dillon, Mark Richards and Chris Townsend.

The outdoor event was organised to run alongside the Backpackers Club annual meet and AGM, bringing together selected manufacturers of lightweight camping and outdoor equipment, cycle-touring bikes and a number of books and guides with an outdoor theme. The event was open to the public as well as the backpackers club, aiming to prompt the exchange of ideas and tips on equipment from the experts, for the benefit of those new to lightweight camping and trekking.

Sadly after a month of stunning dry weather, the weekend was marred by wind, rain and thunder, resulting in lower than expected visitors, and an early pack-up on Sunday. A shame, as this was a good idea which lacked good weather and good visitor numbers.

The Cicerone ‘gang’ had a good time though, and Chris, Paddy and Mark were able to chat to plenty of enthusiasts, Chris sold and signed several copies of his book Scotland, and Mark sold and signed some of his new Lakeland Fellranger guides. Paddy too made one or two sales, before decamping to attempt an overnight wild camp on the top of Cross Fell. Sadly for him the weather was so extreme that he was forced to use alternative shelter before returning home!

Look out for any publicity we have on our website for other events, and for the Backpackers’ meet next year!

Lakeland Fellranger news

April 18th, 2011 in Book Catalogue, Cicerone Authors by Sarah

Cicerone author Mark Richards called into the office last week to collect copies of his new Lakeland Fellranger guides.

Mark said “Exciting times, I’m three-quarters of the way to a personal life ambition – the completion of a very personal survey of all the fells of Lakeland. I have never been a peak-bagger, I simply love being on the fell. So the drive to create this series is more an attempt to embrace the magic of the whole fell environment in my mind’s eye. Books five – The Western Fells and six – The North-Western Fells have been two years in the making, good years for all the right reasons.

The Western and North-Western Fells have great character. One never ceases to take pleasure in visiting them over and over, as was necessary for a thorough view on the discerning routes to the top and connecting ridges. A guide is only a stepping stone and never a complete statement, the real journey of discovery is the one users of the guides undertake. I’m now wandering the quieter pastures of the Northern Fells, with only Blencathra a hark back to my days on Great Gable and Pillar.”

Regards

Mark Richards

A great walk on the Southern Fells

February 16th, 2011 in Book Catalogue, Cicerone Office by Sarah

A combination of busy lives and rubbish weather meant we hadn’t been out for a walk for some time. We’d planned to get out on Sunday and head up Coniston Old Man. Waiting for the kettle to boil early on Sunday morning, we did a check of the latest mountain weather forecast, and quickly came to the conclusion it was wise to change our plans and opt for a lower walk.

Mark pulled out the maps, whilst I grabbed a couple of Fellranger guides off the shelf. Tea drunk, it was decided, we were off to Holme Fell (which lies due south of Little Langdale).

Mark Richards details Holme Fells in his Lakeland Fellranger Southern Fells guide as “One of the great fells of Lakeland, Holme Fell boasts a southernmost façade of rocky ribs that jut through a dense cover of native tress to give it an air of impregnability…”

We approached from High Oxon Fell, and as we were descending via Uskdale Gap towards Yew Tree Tarn, the sky went black and snow started to fall. We were relieved to be on lower fells, as the cloud base had dropped to around 400m, and the temperature had dropped a few degrees too.

At just 317m it would be so easy to dismiss. But this fell has much to offer, and we had such an enjoyable walk. Its one I can highly recommend.

Cheers

Sarah
