proper winter nick!
Dan Bailey emailed me this week with a stop press amendment to his latest ridges book: Given the current cold snap perhaps we should reword the section on cold climbing?
Unsurprisingly, now that snow has fallen in the Scilly Isles, we’ve cut the bit that despaired of seeing winter conditions again south of the border… (see Jonathan’s post about Helvellyn last week and my pic here of Swirral Edge and Helvellyn taken from Catstycam on Sunday – I was sporting my crampons for the first time and the névé was perfect).
The new book – Ridges of England, Wales and Ireland – is a companion volume to his best-selling Scotland’s Mountain Ridges and just as packed with exciting but accessible scrambles and climbs. And we’ve added a climbing glossary this time to help grade 1 scramblers like me to understand what’s going on… jossy? gendarme? thrutch? thuggy? Is it just me?
And there are lots of seasonal tips on winter climbs should we be lucky enough to have another fall of snow…

The forecast was good, some low cloud, clear above 400m, great visibility, small risk of snow showers. The reality was different, 10m visibility, strong winds. Maybe the only bit that was as expected was the temperature. Very cold. That’s mountains for you.
Well done to everyone else up there too. And well done Cassie, proving once again that you have the makings of a proper dog.
