An evening with Mark Richards

June 23rd, 2010 in Book Catalogue, Cicerone Authors by Sarah

As part of Oxfam’s Bookfest Cicerone author Mark Richards will be in the Keswick store on the evening of 13th July giving a talk about his walking life and the Lakeland Fells in particular.

Mark’s transition from full-time farmer to full-time outdoor writer has been a gradual one. In 1973, with the direct encouragement of Alfred Wainwright, he wrote his first walking guide to the Cotswold Way. Since then he has indulged a pleasure in exploring rural Lakeland by creating an eight volume Lakeland Fellranger series which covers every fell in the National Park.

Mark’s recent work includes leaflets to the Stagecoach bus services in Lakeland under the title From A to B to SEE. He has also appeared on TV with Julia Bradbury in Wainwright Walks and Coast to Coast.

Cicerone guides available in eBook versions

June 9th, 2010 in Book Catalogue by Sarah

For everyone who loves books and reading, the topic of digitisation in the book world has been discussed at length over the past few years. With the explosion in popularity of downloading films and music, the idea of downloading books electronically was always going to be a talking point for those who love to read. Now with many e-readers available on the market, downloading books is gaining huge popularity, and Cicerone has decided to join the revolution.

Cicerone eBooksFor many years visitors to our website have enjoyed the ability to search inside our books, a fantastic feature that allows you to be more informed about a book’s contents and whether it’s right for you before you buy. Full digitisation of our books is the logical next step, and eBook purchases are now available to buy and instantly download. Most of our books are included, and we’re aiming to make as many available to buy electronically as we can.

There are many advantages of e-books over print. One of the many things that travellers tend to think about at the planning stage of a journey is packing, and how light bags need to be. One advantage of an e-book is that you can buy a book and print off a few pages to take with you, rather than carry a whole printed book. This could mean a significant difference in the overall weight of your rucksack, especially if you tend to take more than one book with you! Instant downloading is also an advantage because it means you can start to plan your next walk, trek, or bike ride straight away.

Cicerone have a great offer to get you started and allow you to decide for yourself the advantages or disadvantages of digital over print. When you buy the printed version of one of the included books from our website you can get the digital version at 50% discount, so that you can make a direct comparison between the two and see which you prefer.

Roger Clegg – photography exhibition

May 27th, 2010 in Book Catalogue, Cicerone Authors by Sarah

If you are in Newcastle between the 11 June and the 30 August, then head to The Biscuit Factory Art Gallery to take a look at the work of Roger Clegg, the photographer behind the stunning collection of images in the Cicerone book The Spirit of Hadrian’s Wall.

Roger is an award-winning photographer, who lives in Hexham, just 20 minutes from the place that has become his abiding passion – Hadrian’s Wall. Roger embraced photography professionally after a career in business and then as a lecturer. He has captured the contrasting moods and timeless scenes of Hadrian’s Wall from coast to coast, and is responsible, amongst many achievements, for the iconic scenes on the side of Northern Rail trains; the pictures used for marketing Hadrian’s Wall and the British Museum’s Hadrian exhibition in 2008, and of course the book The Spirit of Hadrian’s Wall.

Roger’s picture of Sycamore Gap at midsummer with walkers won the Northumberland National Park prize in the Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2009.

Great Mountain Days raises nearly £400 for Fix the Fells

May 11th, 2010 in Book Catalogue, Cicerone Office by Sarah

Following the publication of Great Mountain Days in the Lake District in 2008, Cicerone teamed up with Fix the Fells project, which with the help of hundreds of volunteers maintains and repairs footpaths in the high fells of the Lake District.

10p from every copy of Great Mountain Days in the Lake District sold is being donated to the project, and we are delighted to present our latest donation of nearly £388.70, which feels like an fitting way of being able to put something back into the fells.

Find out more about our previous donations to the project, or how you can support Fix the Fells and their valuable work, either as a volunteer or by making a donation. Every £1 donated to Fix the Fells is matched by £2 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

GR20 Update

May 11th, 2010 in Book Catalogue by Sarah

We did an update on this back in July 2009 and it seems the online booking system is still causing some confusion. The PNRC website looks like it’s closed for maintenance at the moment making bookings impossible and a recent article in ‘Trek and Mountain’ says that the booking system never seemed to work and wasn’t enforced.  This information backs up the feedback we got through Paddy Dillon last year.

Although the PNRC website did say the system would be introduced again this year we don’t know much more at this stage.  We’ll do our best to keep you informed of any updates though!

Lots of you have been in touch to tell us about your days out enjoying the wintery conditions.

Anthony (one of our webguys) had a great time on the classic Tower Ridge route on Ben Nevis, while John (our office manager Sue’s husband) experienced near perfect conditions traversing the Aonach Eagach ridge overlooking Glencoe.

Keep your great stories coming in…

Great Mountain Days in the Lake District – Walk Thirty-Eight

February 9th, 2010 in Book Catalogue by Sarah

After what felt like months since we had been for a good walk, we managed to get out into the Lakes on Sunday for a well-deserved walk.

A quick flick through my copy of Great Mountain Days in the Lake District, and the walk was chosen – walk thirty-eight – Helm Crag, Gibson Knott, Calf Crag and Sergeant Man from Grasmere.

Just below the summit of Helm Crag

The forecast was good, and the cloud base was high as we set off early on the rising pitched path towards the summit of Helm Crag. We had the summits of Helm Crag and Gibson Knott all to ourselves, and it was only when we reached Calf Crag that we noticed someone heading towards us.

It was such a great walk, and the views of the snowy tops all around were stunning. It was one of those days that you didn’t want to end…I can’t wait for more great walks in 2010.

Illuminating Hadrian’s Wall

January 19th, 2010 in Book Catalogue by Sarah

Organisers are looking for 500 people to help create a line of light from one side of Britain to the other, along the length of Hadrian’s Wall, on 13th March 2010.

Each of the volunteer ‘Illuminators’ will be part of a small team responsible for lighting one of the 500 individual points of light that will be placed at 250 metre intervals along the route of the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.

The first of the lights will be illuminated at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend in the North East of England.  Each of the other lights will then be lit in sequence by the Illuminators, with the line of light reaching Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast about an hour later.

Anyone who would like to be one of the Illuminators will need to register on the website at www.illuminatinghadrianswall.com before 22nd February.  (Illuminators must be aged 18 or over.)

For those keen to watch rather than actively participate as an illuminator, two free events will take place, one at Segedunum in Wallsend where the line of light will start and the other at Carlisle in Cumbria, to welcome the light into the North West.

Great Mountain Days in Lake District – Walk Forty-Six

December 14th, 2009 in Book Catalogue, Cicerone Office by Sarah

I’d been following the weather forecast for a couple of days, and Sunday was looking to be fairly perfect walking weather. A quick flick through the pile of Cicerone guidebooks on my desk last thing on Friday, and it was decided – we were going walking on Sunday.

Looking towards Helvellyn

Looking towards Helvellyn

I had chosen walk forty-six from Mark Richards Great Mountain Days in the Lake District – Place Fell from Patterdale. Mark writes ‘Place Fell is far more than a pleasing facade, it is a wonderful ‘place’ to walk’. The prospects from its summit are majestic, and the outlooks from its roller-coaster shoreline path absolute heaven – making a very special day’s walking’ and I have to agree.

We set the alarm early, and headed out from Patterdale just before first light – it’s my favourite time of the day, and the frost scrunched under foot – it just felt magical.

After leaving the summit, we headed over in the direction of High Dodd. I made out the outline of a deer grazing about 300 yards in front of us, on closer inspection the herd must have been around 20 – 30 strong, with another herd grazing to the left of us.

I’m now back at my desk and planning some more outings for Boxing Day and New Years Day, the only problem is I’m too spoilt for choice….
