Why are some guides in PVC covers and some not?

The PVC is great for protecting the guide in rucksacks and pockets. We are big users of our own guides and find it incredibly useful. The guide can come back from a long trek or a weeks’ scrambling looking as good as new.

We would love to put all our guides in PVC covers. However it is very expensive, and the extra cost would have caused a serious discussion with the bank manager long ago.

So our policy is to put the guide in PVC if it really helps the user of the guide – where it is a trek, or where it is wet. So most of our blue covers ‘International Mountains’ guides are in PVC and so are most of our ‘UK mountains’ guides and many of the major ‘Long-distance trails’ guides have PVC covers.
