Allerdale Ramble - route diversion
p105, Keswick to Dancing Gate
It has been brought to our attention that the route marked on the OS maps, north of Portinscale, along the banks of the River Derwent is incorrect. The right of way follows the lane from How Farm marked as an alternate route in the guidebook. Signs have been erected on the ground to divert walkers and new editions of the OS map will show this change.
Maps required, p11
HARVEY now publish a single, waterproof 'Cumbria Way' strip map for the whole route, at 1:40,000, with some additional useful information.
Start (end) point in Ulverston, p11
The start (end) of the Cumbria Way in Ulverston is now marked with a conical sculpture at the corner of The Gill car park.
Skelwith Bridge, p34
The waymarks now direct walkers across the river on the new footbridge above Skelwith Force, rather than round on the road via Skelwith Bridge, but you might still want to detour via Skelwith Bridge for refreshment at Chesters or the Skelwith Bridge Hotel.
Elterwater, p36
There is no longer a shop and post office in Elterwater (but the shop at Chapel Stile is not far away if you need provisions).
Denton Holme to Carlisle City Centre, p88
This stretch can now be done entirely on the new Caldew Riverside Trail (shown on the HARVEY map). In early May 2009 it was closed for resurfacing and there were no Cumbria Way waymarks beyond Denton Holme, but following waymarks for Sustrans route 7 (cycle route) gets you to the castle (or the market cross - guides differ as to which is the official endpoint).
