A guide to treks and climbs in Wadi Rum, Jordan, one of the world’s leading desert climbing and trekking areas. The book includes thorough visiting information and an extensive selection of explorations, treks and climbs both trad and sport at all grades. Includes all massifs in Rum plus outlying areas.

Seasons

Spring and autumn are the norm, with pleasant weather. Summer is for masochists who don’t need water; winter can be very cold and sometimes wet.

Centres

Aqaba is closest. Amman is far to the north. No hotels in Rum; these are outside in the Aqaba and Petra areas. Campsite, plus villages of Rum, Rashdiya and Quweirah.

Difficulty

Treks, camel and 4WD journeys, plus trad and sports climbs throughout the grade range.

Must See

Rum is stunning with its enormous red cliffs and canyons - 'vast, echoing and godlike' said TE Lawrence. Petra makes a rather brilliant rest day.

Jebel Suweibit Gharbia

SOUTH FACE

271A. The Haj (Possible first ascent of this summit) A.Howard, M.Shaw, D.Taylor 23rd April 1995.

A stunning black pyramidal wall with an intimidating series of cracks up the centre of the lower face and an amazing diagonal line across the superb upper slab. A unique climb in a great setting. 280m T.D.inf 4-5 hours. Carry the usual rack of gear including at least one set of size 2-4 cams and some 5mm cord for the thread. Map and topo page 221.

Descent: Scramble E down the slabby ridge to a hidden abseil (20m) onto a pillar on the S face. (Here, it may be possible to abseil down the W side of the pillar onto scree and so directly to the gully head.) Now, go E down mushrooms then abseil (20m) into a chimney and scramble down returning W to the gully head.

At the top of the gully go behind big boulders, then a long walk east along a terrace (some short descents), then left to a 20m abseil down the nose. Left again through a passage and down to the edge of a steep chimney. Abseil into it (15m) and scramble to the desert. 1½ hours.

Just N of the above summit, is:

Jebel Hathbut Suweibit

The east side of this small peak is reached by driving into the canyon which splits this group of peaks. A prominent bottom-less SE diedre will be seen just above the ‘cross-roads’.

271B. Barefoot Groove M.Shaw, D.Taylor, A.Howard, Atieeq Auda 20th April 1995.

The obvious black groove is gained by cracks rising from the mouth of a gully, after passing an awkward (4+) section of mushrooms: 200m. A.D. inf. 1-1½ hours.

Descent: Go first N, then NW down slabs. 15 mins.

Anyone spending a day in this area will discover many more possibilities, some obvious, some in hidden canyons. Have fun!
