6: Penyghent & Plover Hill

8¼ miles

Strenuous, with a climb of 1400’ – steep and rocky in places – from Brackenbottom to the summit of Penyghent. 1/3 mile on a motor-road (with footway) and 1/3 mile on a virtually traffic-free lane. Otherwise mostly on clear paths but with some boggy sections. 6 ladder-stiles. An optional shortcut, omitting Plover Hill, avoids most of the bogs and reduces the walk to 5½ miles.

Parking: Horton in Ribblesdale. Car park (pay and display) and toilets at N end of village.
