Preface

Our final volume of the trilogy continues the pattern of the previous volumes. Our aim is to describe a wide variety of walks, averaging between 4 and 8 miles, ideal for a half-day or a leisurely full day, keeping mainly to the lower fells, valleys, woodlands and the coast. Some classic walks are included, but we also point out quieter routes which will appeal to those who seek less popular but equally beautiful places. Many of these old green paths, half-forgotten bridleways and retired peat roads.

Although this is not a primarily high-fell walking guide, the nature of the area demands a degree of effort and many of the walks visit a summit. Priority is given to the lower fells, which we have found to be as rewarding as their higher neighbours.

We have aimed to present a combination of comprehensive coverage, detailed route description and easy-to-follow maps in an interesting way. If you work your way through the walks you will, like us, come to form a special relationship with this lesser known part of Lakeland.
