Seasons

Centres

Access into the plateau is really only via Aviemore and Braemar. Lochnagar is accessed through Read More... Ballater; Creag Meagaidh via Loch Laggan.

Difficulty

Routes range from Scottish Grades I to VIII, so covers the full range of winter climbing Read More... possibilities.

Notes on maps
The climbing areas described in this guide are covered by the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 maps. The Lochnagar/Creag an Dubh Loch area is covered by Sheet 44, entitled Ballater; the Cairngorm area is covered by Sheet 36 entitled Grantown and Cairngorm. Part of the area is also on Sheet 43, Braemar. The Cairngorm area is also covered by the Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure Map High Tops of the Cairngorms at the 1:25,000 scale. Creag Meagaidh is covered by Sheet 34, Fort Augustus and Glen Albyn area, and is also on Sheet 42, Glen Garry and Loch Rannoch. Harveys Maps also produce a 1:25,000 and a 1:40,000 map which covers the northern part of the area.

The ability to use a map and compass correctly is essential for all winter mountaineers and climbers.
