'Modern climbing guidebooks come in many different formats, from topo to text and selective to definitive. First and foremost guidebooks should motivate you to get out and tackle the climbs described within their pages. Having fired your enthusiasm, they should help you decide which routes to do. Finally, they should enable you to find the route of your choice.
This puropse should all be achieved in a clear, concise and informative manner at a price that the average climber can afford.

So how does this, the fifth edition stack up? The guide is well laid out and typeset in an easy to read font. With 16 pages of exciting colour photographs and a comprehensive set of neatly drawn digrams, the reader will be eagerly awaiting the onset of winter. Chapters follow a consistent structure covering the layout of the cliff or corrie, the approaches, descents and conditions. The rather more detailed section on avalanches and how to avoid them should be studied by all those who venture onto Scottish hills in winter.

Although a devotee of definitive guides, on the hill I preferred the clarity of focus of the Cicerone guide, it provides succint descriptions specific to the winter conditions.

All in all, a recommended publication.'
