21: Three Craven Villages

6 ¼ miles

Flowery meadows, lush patures and ancient green lanes and bridleways characterize this delectable ramble linking three ancient, attractive and historic little villages. Progress is easy, with no steep gradients, and the views are surprisingly extensive for such a low-level walk. Two ladder-stiles (both with adjacent gates) and half-a-mile of quiet motor-roads. Canine companions will probably have to be kept, for the most part, on a lead (sheep and cows all over the place).

Route directions:

  1. Start along road signposted Hetton ½ Gargrave 4.
  2. Pass under railway and immediately turn L along farm road. Go R at fork. Keep L of the buildings to follow enclosed bridleway to Hetton.
  3. Go R through village.
  4. Fork L (BW Hetton Common) to gate, and continue up broad, walled track.
  5. Turn sharp L along another walled track.
  6. When enclosed track ends at gate, go L with wall towards a barn. Continue forward (tractor trail) alongside wall on L.
  7. Cross tarmac lane to gate (BW Friars Head 1). Follow wall no L.
  8. Turn L (FP Flasby ¾). Bear slightly R, away from wall, and aim for gate high in crosswall in front of small patch of trees. Forward with wall, then fence, on L. Through gate and follow fence down to Flasby.
  9. Cross road and go down lane (SP Flasby). Go L at T-junction.
  10. Pass farm on L then fork L (FP Rylstone 2) up farm road.
  11. Keep R (straight on) at fork. In 80yds turn L (FP sign) and follow fence to rejoin farm road at barn.
  12. Don’t cross cattle-grid. Fork R (FP sign) along cart-track. Just beyond gate ignore a path branching R.
  13. At area of boulders turn L (FP sign) and cross field down to gate. Pass wall-corner (FP sign) and aim slightly L of railway underpass. Drop to footbridge than climb to underpass.
  14. Climb ½ L. Pass round end of plantation to wall-stile. Forward alongside fence to join cart-track.
  15. Cart-track goes L between walls then turn R.
  16. Turn L at Barn Cottage and R at T-junction.
