33: Tour of the Peña Remoña group

Grade: B, 950m of ascent, 4–5h.
Map: Adrados, 1:25,000

A classic walk despite the hard work involved in climbing the Tornos de Liordes. Some varied scenery and the chance to visit one of the most beautiful vegas in the Picos.

Cross the field behind the Parador and pick up the track which, with its 38 unforgiving hairpins, climbs the Canal del Embudo in impressive positions beneath the south walls of La Padiorna. The torture ends with the sudden but memorable arrival in the Vega de Liordes (2–2½ h, spring), which is crossed to a small cabin below the Torre de Salinas. A welcome rest will give time to observe the many rebecos that can often be seen in the vega. Climbing S to the Cdo. de Remoña (the ascent of the Torre de Salinas is now possible – see Route 88), the path is followed down on the R of the Canal de Pedabejo, a short section of scrambling leading to easier ground. Continue to descend SE to pass the Mda de Pedabejo and pick up the jeep track that leads E back down to Fuente Dé.

This route can be taken in the opposite direction. This alleviates the long haul up the Tornos de Liordes, but removes some of the drama of the arrival in Vega Liordes. Another variation would be to follow Route 85 to La Padiorna, then descend into Liordes.
