For all but the easiest routes, you should really take a decent map with you. It has already been mentioned that some of these routes pass through remote areas where mapreading skills are essential, and I can recall occasions when the cloud has come down and there’s been no choice but to get the compass out and use it to navigate. The rounded and featureless terrain found in many areas hereabouts can be particularly confusing and simply serves to emphasise the point.
The best general purpose maps, in my view, are the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 ‘Landranger’ series and these will be sufficient for most purposes. The OS also produce an excellent 1:25000 ‘Outdoor Leisure’ series covering areas such as Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder, the Cheviots and the Tweed Valley. They’re double-sided and contain a lot of useful detail. The information at the start of each route gives the relevant OS map number for the ride.
