The Mountains of England and Wales: Vol 2 England
The Mountains of England and Wales: Vol 2 England
A walking guide to climbing the 254 'Nuttall' mountain summits in England, in a series of 60 walks. These form part of the total of 440 mountain summits in England and Wales which reach the height of 2000ft or more. Routes and summits in the Lake District, Cheviots, North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and Dartmoor.England has 254 Nuttall summits, every hill over 2000ft that rises at least 50ft above its surroundings. They span a remarkable range of landscape and character, from the high fell ridges of the Lake District to the remote moorland of the Cheviots, the broad plateau of the North Pennines, the limestone country of the Yorkshire Dales, the gritstone edges of the Peak District and the granite tors of Dartmoor.
Written by John and Anne Nuttall, the walkers who defined the list, this Cicerone guidebook covers all 254 English summits across 60 routes, with detailed descriptions, maps, and drawings for every top. The third edition has been updated throughout and includes the most recently confirmed summit, Calf Top in the Yorkshire Dales, which was promoted to mountain status following an update to the Ordnance Survey geoid model.
- The 254 English Nuttall summits are organised into 13 chapters by region, from the seven Lake District sections to the Cheviots, North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and Dartmoor, making it straightforward to plan days out by area
- Highlights include Blencathra, Great Gable, Coniston Old Man, Pillar and Helvellyn in the Lake District, Kinder Scout and Bleaklow in the Peak District, Cross Fell in the North Pennines and High Willhays on Dartmoor
- Detailed route descriptions cover routes of varying difficulty, from broad ridgeline walks to more demanding terrain, with clear guidance on what to expect on each summit; Pillar Rock is the only summit requiring a rock climb
- Maps and hand-drawn illustrations accompany the route descriptions throughout, giving a clear picture of each summit and the surrounding terrain
- Definitive Nuttall lists, an alphabetical index of all tops and a section covering deleted tops are included for reference, alongside notes on map selection and access for each area
The definitive guide to England's 2000ft summits, written by the walkers who defined the list. The companion volume, The Mountains of England and Wales Vol 1 Wales, is also available from Cicerone.

Author Highlight
“For us, our last top was also a first; our first ascent of Pillar Rock. Just as Sir Hugh Munro’s tables of the 3000ft mountains of Scotland include but one summit requiring climbing skills, so it is fitting that the mountains of England and Wales should have one too. Pillar Rock, a magnificent tower of rock above Ennerdale in the Lake District, is a rock climb, one which we had left until last, not because it was difficult, but because it was the last summit in England to be attained by man, so too it would be ours.”
- Anne and John Nuttall, authors of The Mountains of England and Wales: Vol 2 England

Update
A new mountain: Calf Top
An update to the Ordnance Survey geoid model, which plays a part in determining the height of summits, has led to the birth of a new mountain. Calf Top (SD 664 856) in the Yorkshire Dales previously came in a mere 3/4 of an inch short of the all-important 2,000ft mark. However, the latest revision has amended its height to just 1/10 of an inch over 2,000ft - making it officially a mountain.
