Route Directions
- Walk along road towards distant white building (Pack Horse Inn).
- 100yds beyond Well Hole Cottage go R through gate (PW sign) into walled path. Go L with wall. Ignore flagged path descending R. When wall ends a clear path continues, running below large outcrops to meet a road at a hairpin bend.
- Go down road. At first bend go L (FP sign) along grassy drive. Take gate on R (Path to Streamside), cross footbridge and climb stepped path.
- At path junction go R along broad green path. From stile a thin path runs through bracken and into woodland. 25yds past a wall-corner path crosses to LH side to wall.
- Pass a house and keep straight on along broad woodland track.
- Turn sharp L up path to pass through small gateway in short length of wall. Climb steeply. Just before reaching a wooden stile double back L to small gate near tall weathervane. Cross corner stile into hamlet.
- Three tracks leave hamlet. Take middle one, immediately to R of detached house.
- Turn R (SP Walshaw Dean Permissive Path) up to gate. Climb broad track by wall on L.
- At top of enclosed track go straight up thin path. Rejoin broad track and follow it straight ahead over moor. At a shooting hut it swings L to head for dam of middle reservoir.
- Cross dam and go L along tarmac reservoir road. In places a fenced walkers’ path runs alongside it.
- Just before reaching motor-road take gate on L and follow wall L to car park.
- Definitely one of the best walks in the book. Ravine, woodland, riverside and moorland scenery of stunning beauty, with the added bonus of an absence of pylons. The walk is moderately strenuous, with several climbs - some of them quite steep. No ladder-stiles, but a very high wall-stile near point 10 could present a dog difficulty. ¼ mile on a quiet moor road. Safe in mist.
