Updates February 2007

Walk 33, p180
At the church swing around and take the right-hand track, N and then S on its east side, concreted, to a four-road junction below... 'inverted Y' junction.

This should read as follows:
At the church swing around and take the right-hand track, N and then S on its east side, concreted, to take a left at the second road junction, which leads initially down a concreted track towards the 'inverted Y' junction.

Walk 42, p228
After 'to the Kandanos– Saint Kyriaki road' replace 'close to rose-clad House Number 125' with the following:

'turn right and walk the road loop to a descending donkey track opposite. Leave the road to descend the stone-stepped donkey track for a short distance to a second loop in the Kandanos–Saint Kyriaki road ahead, passing, on the right, rose-clad House Number 125'.

Update February 2009

Walk 43 – To Elusive Spina and Beyond (page 230)

A major problem has arisen on this route. A section of the minor road leading to St Antonios from Kandanos has been destroyed in the construction of a quarry at two points. This means that the walk cannot be done on foot from Kandanos and that, if you are driving to St Antonios, you need to approach it from the upper (more northerly) turning off the Kandanos–Chania road, indicated on the map in the guidebook.

The first paragraph of the route description should now read:
"In Kandanos take the Chania bus from the main street (NE) for approximately 5km to a sign on the right hand side of the road, on a bend, indicating St Antonios. Alternatively you may be lucky enough to arrange a lift to the road end or the church of St Antonios. Take this narrow road and at an acute U-bend in the valley floor, with the extensively quarried hillsides and narrow ravines below, stand the pristine white walls and ten tiny windows of the church of Saint Antonios (2). Not so appealing are the nearby goat pens! From here the gorge walk begins."

The last paragraph of the route description should now read:
"From the community of Spina descend via the confines of the gorge of ascent to Saint Antonios. If you don’t have pre-arranged transport from St Antonios turn right on the road leading back to the main Chania/Kandanos road. There are three buses a day passing in both directions on this road so it is advisable to allow plenty of time on your return to coincide with the bus returning back to Kandanos. Details of bus times are available in Kandanos."

It is also proposed to build a wind farm on the Apopigadi which will cause a major upheaval during and after construction work and be a danger to anyone walking through Spina to the church, Saint Zinon, page 233, para 3. At the time of writing there is a strong campaign of local opposition to this work, however, so we cannot say whether this will take place.

Please take care and let us have any further feedback on this using the website contact form under Contact.
