Seasons
Spring is best, high summer perhaps too hot for strenuous walking. Winter walking is fine, but it can be rainy and (even!) a little cold.
Centres
It's not a big island (similar to the Isle of Wight) so anywhere will be fine, it depends more on the sort of evenings you want.
Difficulty
Half- and full-day walks, usually easy, but with some longer stretches along the clifftops.
Must See
Old Valetta (a World Heritage Site); excellent walking on cliff coastlines out of the towns; historic buildings of the many peoples who have come to Malta.

1:25,000 Sheet 1 - Gozo & Comeno, Sheet 2 - Malta West, Sheet 3 - Malta East

1:50,000 Kompass Wanderkarte, Sheet 235

The most detailed maps of the Maltese Islands are rather dated, having been produced in 1984, but they remain the most useful for walkers. Three sheets cover the islands at a scale of 1:25,000 and are titled: Sheet 1 Gozo & Comino, Sheet 2 Malta West, and Sheet 3 Malta East. Extracts from these maps, marked with the routes, are used throughout this guidebook. To obtain sheet copies of the maps, it is best to go in person, Monday to Friday except holidays, to the Works Division, Block A, Belt is-Sebh, Floriana, VLT 05. This is only a short walk from the City Gate bus terminus at Valletta. Alternatively, purchase the 1:50,000 Kompass Wanderkarte 235 of Malta, or one of the many tourist maps that can be obtained from good bookshops before reaching the islands. Maps of Malta can be ordered in advance from specialist suppliers such as Stanfords, 12-14 Long Acre, London WC2E 9BR, tel 0207 836 1321; The Map Shop, 15 High Street, Upton-upon-Severn WR8 0HJ, tel 01684 593146; or Cordee, 3a De Montford Street, Leicester LE1 7HD, tel 0116 254 3579. Free street plans for most of the interesting towns on the islands can be obtained from Tourist Information Centres. Anyone wishing to have comprehensive street plans for the whole of the Maltese Islands should obtain a copy of The mAZe Street Atlas, published by Uptrend Publishing.
