OS Explorer (1:25,000) Sheet: 218, 242, 217, 216, 203, 201

THE RELEVANT sheet number of the Ordnance Survey map both 1/50,000 and 1/25,000 is given for each walk. Regular walkers will find these a useful investment in making changes to routes, extending or curtailing a walk to suit the day’s conditions. It is also helpful in planning other expeditions if crossing paths, not on the scheduled route, are checked for quality and destination. One of the many pleasures of walking is the time spent on some high point with map spread over the knees picking out distant landmarks, putting a name to a misty hilltop or village spire.

Excellent as the OS Maps are they cannot guarantee easy walking. Paths that are writ large upon the map are sometimes ill defined on the ground, have been subject to diversion, or having fallen into disuse have been replaced by unofficial but locally accepted alternatives. No map maker however good can totally keep up with the changes. The best map for the walker is undoubtedly the 1/25,000 scale, 2 ½ inches to the mile. It provides an immense amount of detail and is particularly useful in determining the passage of paths through fields, for example, by clearly showing which side of a boundary fence the walker can legally follow. The appropriate sheet number is quoted in the information panel at the start of each walk.
