Exploring the Sussex Downs and East Hampshire AONB, the South Downs Way follows the northern escarpment for much of the way and rarely descends to habitation except where river valleys interrupt the regular course of the Downs.
A full description of the trail is included from east to west and west to east over 12 stages.
