Clark, Ronald W. The Alps (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1973) An entertaining collection of essays by a well-known mountain historian.

Clark, Ronald W. The Splendid Hills (Phoenix House, 1948) The life and photographs of Vittorio Sella.

Dumler, Helmut & Burkhardt, Willi The High Mountains of the Alps (Diadem, 1993) A beautifully produced volume which illustrates the Alpine 4000m peaks.

Freshfield, D.W. Italian Alps (Longmans, 1875/Blackwell, 1937) Travels by a Victorian pioneer in the Lepontine and Bregaglia Alps, among others.

Irving, R.L.G. The Alps (Batsford, 1939) Long out of print, but available on special loan from some libraries or via internet book-search sites, this volume by a noted Alpine connoisseur covers the whole range.

Kugy, Julius Alpine Pilgrimage (Murray, 1934) A fascinating book by the Austrian climber whose love of the Julian Alps was particularly revealing.

Lieberman, Marcia R. The Outdoor Traveler’s Guide: The Alps (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, New York 1991) With numerous fine illustrations by Tim Thompson, much of the Alpine chain is described.

Maeder, Herbert The Mountains of Switzerland (George Allen & Unwin, 1968) A large-format book of monochrome photographs that illustrate the Swiss Alps from a climber’s perspective.

Moore, A.W. The Alps in 1864 (latest edition in 2 vols, Blackwell, 1939) Moore was with Whymper and Horace Walker during the summer of 1864.

Moran, Martin Alps 4000 (David & Charles, 1994) An account of Moran’s and Simon Jenkins’ epic journey across all the 4000m summits of the Alps.

Poucher, W.A. The Alps (Constable, 1983) Contains 100 colour photographs of major Alpine peaks and general mountain scenes.

Reynolds, Kev Walking in the Alps (Cicerone Press, 1998) An attempt to bring Walker (see below) up to date. The whole range is described in 19 chapters.

Walker, J. Hubert Walking in the Alps (Oliver & Boyd, 1951) A splendid book of inspiration. Walker describes selected regions in beautiful prose.

Whymper, Edward Scrambles Amongst the Alps (many editions) This is the classic volume of mountaineering literature covering Whymper’s Alpine campaigns from 1860-1865.
