Thirty years ago the Pyrenees were the great undiscovered mountains of Europe - remote, poorly mapped and with little or nothing written in English to entice and guide would-be visitors.

The first edition of Kev Reynold’s classic guide was published 30 years ago this year and played a large part in opening up the range. Now the Pyrenees are thoroughly accessible and are a terrific alternative to the crowded Alps and Dolomites. The mystery may have gone but the magic still remains.

The fifth edition of Walks and Climbs in the Pyrenees, just published, has been completely updated and expanded. With 170 routes which take both sides of the border (including 11 in Andorra), the book reasserts its claim to be the definitive guide. Its 416 pages are packed with details on valleys, peaks, glaciers, lakes and mountain huts of the range. The practical information is concise and useful. Don’t go there without this book.

'This Cicerone guide, now in its 5th edition, describes 170 routes found in 21 different areas. Each area comes with a description of how to get there and useful information such as which maps are needed and tourist office websites. The book has many photos taken from described routes and each will want to make you go all the more. Overall, this would be an extremely useful guide for any walker wanting to get started in the Pyrenees.'

Kev Reynolds manages to fit 170 routes into this pocket-sized, plastic-covered book, with a largely rewritten text and including three new areas in the Central Pyrenees. He includes a wonderful variety of good routes, from Grade 1 walkes to mountain scrambles (including an AD climb, the Vignemale) and from one-hour strolls to multi-day walks.
Some areas have enough routes to keep a good walker of a relazing mountaineer busy for a week, but others only have two of three. There is information about the huts on both sides of the frontier.
