Recommended road maps of the area covered in this guide are the 1:200,000 ‘Grande carta stradale d’Italia’ series put out by the Touring Club Italiano – ‘Toscana’, ‘Lazio’ and ‘Umbria Marche’. They can be found in bookshops all over Italy. Many tourist offices provide a variety of free road maps for their surrounds, usually on a provincial basis.

As concerns walking maps, only about one-third of the walks in this guide are covered by commercial maps, namely the popular hill areas of the Chianti and some coastal areas, notably the island of Elba. Relevant editors and sheet numbers are listed under each walk heading. Every effort has thus been made to incorporate sufficient detail in the sketch maps in this guide to accompany each walk.

The best source of maps are newspaper stands and bookshops, such as the following specialists in walking maps:
Libreria Stella Alpina, via Corridoni 14, Florence (www.stella-alpina.com) or well-reputed Libreria La Montagna, Via Sacchi 28 bis, 10128 Turin (www.librerialamontagna. it). Overseas suppliers include leading outdoor suppliers and bookshops such as the UK’s Stanfords which has stores in London, Manchester and Bristol (www.stanfords.co.uk).
