The GR221 Drystone Route, or Ruta de Pedra en Sec is a dramatic 140km trek making a complete traverse of the rugged Serra de Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca.

In theory the GR221 could be walked at any time of the year, but the peak summer period is hot and any strenuous activity is quite exhausting. Spring and autumn are usually warm and clear. The winter months can be clear and warm, but there is a greater risk of rain and the possibility of snow on higher ground.

Walking the GR221 involves trekking on the bare limestone bedrock of Mallorca, or following old stone-paved paths through the mountains.

The GR221 pops in and out of a series of attractive little mountain villages, which generally provide good accommodation and offer a selection of bars and restaurants, as well as a couple of shops stocking provisions.

  • full route descriptions with contoured colour maps
  • information about accommodation and services along the way, as well as public transport options
  • alternative starts, finishes, variants and one extension to Puig de María included after the main route
