The most useful general mountain guidebooks for Scotland are the district guides published by the Scottish Mountaineering Trust.

A superb book for anyone interested in upland wildlife is Hostile Habitats, also published by the Scottish Mountaineering Trust.

For field guides and other books on wildlife I find that the Christopher Helm, Poyser and Pica Press books are invaluable. These are all imprints of A&C Black, and their website gives full details: www.acblack.com/christopherhelm.

For the islands of Scotland the only book worth considering is The Scottish Islands by Hamish Haswell Smith, published by Canongate: www.canongate.net.

For more practical advice, try the Mountain Skills Training Handbook, by Pete Hill and Stuart Johnson (published by David and Charles 2004).
