Seasons
Mid-June to mid-September, but probably best avoided when snowy high up unless you are appropriately equipped and experienced.
Centres
Innsbruck, Garmisch and Füssen in the western part, Kufstein, Salzburg and Berchtesgaden in the east.
Difficulty
Treat as mountaineering, sometimes climbing. Klettersteig are broadly equivalent to via ferrata, so you need mountain experience, a good head for heights and the right equipment. A great experience if you have all these.
Must See
Amazing routes on big mountains where most climbers wouldn’t go. Dachstein routes and the Zugspitze.

Bavarian Pre-Alps

1. BRUNNSTEIN 1620m
Baryrischzell Hills

The Julius Mayr climbing path from the Brünnsteinhaus to the summit was equipped as long ago as 1898. It offers some delightful wire rope sections and, as the easiest of all the climbing paths in this book, makes an ideal trial-run for beginners. Both the route up to the Brünnersteinhaus are pleasant, with plenty of variety, and the view to the Wilder Kaiser is sure to whet your appetite for other, more daring, ventures.

Approaches
a) By car the best approach is from the old mountain inn, the Feuriger Tatzelwurm (Fiery Dragon) (765m), on the panoramic road from Bayrischzell across the Sudelfeld.
b) By train, approach from Oberau (480m) on the Rossenheim-Kufstein line.

Ascents to the Brunnsteinhaus
a) The quickest way up begins at the large carpark a few hundred metres above the Tatzelwurm, where there is also a panoramic diagram in a little shelter. Cross the Schoisseralm (950m) then walk north-east on gently-rising forest paths half-way round the Brünnstein to the Brünsteinhaus.
b) Walk through Oberaudorf to the delightful little Luegsteinsee and straight on to the Gasthaus Gfallermühle. Now walk west along a little road through Mühlau and almost to Rechenau. Fork right to the Wildgrubhöfe, then follow the waymarked path to the Brünnsteinhaus.

Summit ascent
From the hut follow the steep forest path up for a few minutes to 25-metre cleft in the rock. Squeeze through, and 30 mins easy, amusing scrambling up the wire ropes will take you to the summit chapel.

Descents
As ascents: but from the summit down to Brünnsteinhaus there is an easier path down the west side…
