Montenegro
Literally translated as ‘Black Mountain’, Montenegro lies on the southern Adriatic coast. This little-known country boasts some pretty spectacular scenery for such a small area: the mountains and their steep-sided jagged peaks, the high pastures, pine forest valleys, lakes and deep canyons, all of which are a walker’s paradise.
Although Montenegro is becoming a popular travel destination, many areas remain untouched by tourism. With the exception of a few busy spots on the coast, most of Montenegro sees few foreign visitors, especially the impressive mountainous regions of Durmitor and Prokletije.
The Dinaric Alps take over most of the country, extending from neighbouring Slovenia and Croatia and reaching great heights in Montengero, with their sharp limestone tops.
Walkers can enjoy travelling through unspoilt natural scenery on the accessible mountain routes, where they will find clearly marked trails.
