UK trekking ideas
Easy first treks:
Across the north of England there are small gems such as the Dales Way, Ribble Way and Teesdale Way, each about a week’s walk. You could also try The Cumbria Coastal Way or the Lleyn Peninsula Coast Path, both easy two week treks around some quieter corners of Britain’s coastline. In Scotland, probably the easiest treks are The Great Glen Way and The Speyside Way, while in the south of England, try The Thames Path, or sections of the Greater Ridgeway, or perhaps the North or South Downs Ways. We have just published a new edition of The Lea Valley Walk, an easy 50 mile walk with good public transport links, and a chance to inspect the Olympic Games site!
Slightly more difficult than these are Hadrian’s Wall Path and Offa’s Dyke (currently out of stock. New edition due in January 2008), or maybe you could try the new Tour of the Lake District, a week-long trek which you can make as easy or challenging as you wish.
More challenging treks:
The main mountain areas of Britain are homes to some great long-distance walks. The West Highland Way is probably one of the best-known treks, but tends to be very busy and popular, taking around 10 days to complete. If you have more time, try North to the Cape (up the north-west coast of Scotland), or The Southern Upland Way. Both these treks take around two full weeks to complete.
Northern England is home to The Pennine Way and The Coast to Coast walk, but these are often very crowded in the summer months. The alternatives are to try other gems like the Reiver’s Way, a 10-day trek in Northumberland’s finest landscapes, or The Cleveland Way and Yorks Wolds Ways, all much quieter, but no less interesting. For those of you seeking a longer project, The South West Coast Path will take you several weeks to complete!
