Managing your day
Many of us have to confine our walking to school holidays, which often means we have little option but to put up with high temperatures while walking or trekking. When it’s really hot, try to manage your day by starting as early as possible, before the main heat of the day builds up.
Most walker’s mountain huts will serve breakfast from around 6.00am, while climber’s huts allow you to be out of the door from around 4.00am. This leaves you with two options, either to arrive at your destination by early lunchtime, or to stop around late morning and take time in the shade to rest until mid-to late afternoon before completing your day’s walking. In any event, try really hard to avoid the sun between 11.00am and 2.00pm.
