SportScotland avalanche service
sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS)- a valuable service for anyone planning a visit to the Scottish hills this winter.
SAIS began in 1988 as an avalanche forecasting service operating in two areas, Glencoe and the North Cairngorms.
Since those early days the service has grown. You can now get detailed forecasts covering the avalanche and climbing conditions for five key areas during the winter.
Blyth Wright, SAIS co-ordinator, is also the translator of two Cicerone mini-guides on a subject close to his heart - Snow and Avalanche!
Blyth has climbed and skied extensively in the UK, the Alps and North America for over 40 years. Formerly Assistant Director of the International School of Mountaineering in Switzerland and Instructor at Glenmore Lodge National Sports Centre, since 1989 he has acted as Co-ordinator of the sportscotland Avalanche Information Service. Blyth has represented Scotland and the UK at many international meetings of snow and avalanche experts.
