Books for those new to hillwalking

The Hillwalker's Manual – a good all-round handbook
Map and Compass – Navigation skills in an easy, step-by-step approach, from beginners to night-nav. Fun and easy to follow.
Navigation – a popular mini-guide.

For some walks for all the family, try the range of books by author Jack Keighley. These are hand-drawn, with illustrated sketch maps, and step-by-step stages describing the routes.

In general, if you are looking for a great selection of fairly easy walking routes, choose from our British Walking series (the ones with the dark-green covers).
