France is predominantly a country of contrasting rural landscapes, from the soaring mountains of the Alps to limestone gorges, fields of lavender, ancient volcanoes and Cathar castles, each demanding your attention and understanding.

It can mean very different things to different people. For some it evokes thoughts of vineyards, elegant chateaus and fine food; for many of us, the landscape invites us to explore.

The allure of the Alps and the other mountain landscapes of the Massif Central, Provence, Pyrenees and the Vosges and Jura is overwhelming, and one visit is never enough, but simply an introduction to a lifelong passion.
