Africa
Some of the highest peaks of North Africa can be found alongside the coastal and desert areas of Morocco. The High Atlas Mountains, near Marrakech, are an interesting range for walkers, with their valleys, gorges and villages, and North Africa’s highest peak, Jebel Toubkal. Trekking in the Atlas Mountains offers detailed descriptions of walks in the range plus practical advice for visitors in Morocco.
South towards the Sahara desert lie the Anti-Atlas Mountains, which are perfect for the experienced climber, as the beautiful granite cliffs have some long and complex crags, some of which have never been climbed before. Coverage of these can be found in Climbing in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas.
Then there’s Kilimanjaro, not only the highest freestanding mountain in the world, but also the world’s highest volcano! Walkers can enjoy a challenging, yet achievable trek up this dramatic mountain, with no need for technical expertise.
