Cicerone trekking workshops
How to begin exploring the world
The best trekking trips begin with a dream – and idea of a journey completed on foot, achieved through your own efforts.
Multi-day walks and day walks raise different issues to consider, whether its trying to get everything right on a first trek, or understanding the challenges and issues of trekking in far-off lands.
This series of new workshops will help you to get ideas and new knowledge on:
- where to go
- how and when to do it
- what you need to know – tips on logistics, information, kit and fitness
Each workshop will be presented by a small highly experienced panel – mountain and expedition leaders and world-leading experts in their field, all Cicerone authors or part of the wider Cicerone team.
Within each one-hour workshop, the content will be geared towards particular needs, whether for first multi-day walks, first Alpine treks, trekking beyond the Alps (Himalaya, Africa…) or cycle-touring – ‘trekking on a bike’. There will also be an extra half hour available at the end of each session to discuss particular issues.
Cicerone talks in the World of Adventure Theatre
Kat Davis – Japan’s Kumano Kodo
Experience a remote, ancient and spiritual Japan while hiking the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails that traverse the sacred mountains of the Kii Peninsula, due south of Kyoto. Follow in Emperor’s and samurai’s footsteps through verdant forested mountains to the three grand shrines of Kumano. Stay in a temple and eat Buddhist vegetarian cuisine in Koyasan, the high mountain basin and headquarters of the Shingon school of Buddhism established in 816. Join Kat to discover that there’s something for everyone, from short easy hikes of a few hours, to weekend and week-long itineraries with challenging mountain passes.
Jan Bakker - Tajikistan: Pamir Mountain Lakes, a journey across Tajikistan’s high-altitude lake district
Jan, co-author of Cicerone’s new guide Trekking in Tajikistan, takes you on a visually stunning journey on foot through the remote heart of the Pamir Mountains. In his lecture, he allows a glimpse into a high-altitude mountain environment seldom visited by foreign travellers. From walking through wild Pamir valleys surrounded by tumbling glaciers and pitching his tent on the shores of pristine turquoise mountain lakes to sipping endless cups of tea with local shepherds, his account of trekking in one of the least visited mountain regions on the planet will make your feet itching to go there.
Paddy Dillon - Greenland's Arctic Circle Trail
For a backpacking expedition with a difference, try hiking the Arctic Circle Trail. Greenland is one of the most inhospitable and sparsely populated places on the planet. Nonetheless, a growing number of hardy souls travel here every year to take on the Arctic Circle Trail, a 165km-long route that offers an incredible sense of space and silence from start to finish across one of the harshest environments in the world. Stretching between the towns of Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut, trekking the trail takes 7 to 10 days. It is a fascinating route to explore, especially in its remoter parts.
