Getting fit for the mountains
Unless you have been able to enjoy lockdown in a hilly or mountainous area, no amount of walking or running around the local streets will prepare your body for the mountains. This will mean you're prone to injury.
Trying some of these ideas may help:
- climbing stairs – lots of them, as often and as many as possible
- wobble board/wobble cushion work – balance on two feet, then balance on one foot at a time, for 1 minute, then try to build to two or three minutes, twice a day. (This will be invaluable for strong ankles over rough and steep ground and tussocky grass.
- carrying a loaded rucksack on your daily local walks
- any other of your favourite exercises for building leg and core strength.
Travel within the UK
We are all wanting to return to the mountains and places of beauty, but we need to think not just of ourselves, but of others too. Collectively we can be responsible. Always follow guidelines, follow any re-routed paths to keep local communities safe, and above all, be considerate and think carefully about anything you do.

General advice – Please remember that if it feels too crowded it is too crowded and have a ‘plan B’ ready.
If you feel unwell while away from home
If you are unfortunate and begin to display symptoms that are indicative of having contracted Covid 19, then the following instructions should be rigidly applied. (Extract from UK government website)
If a guest is displaying signs of the Covid-19 virus while staying in overnight accommodation for a permitted reason, they should inform the accommodation provider, immediately self-isolate where they are to minimise any risk of transmission, and request a test. If they are confirmed to have Covid-19, they should return home if they reasonably can. They should use private transport but only drive themselves if they can do so safely. If a guest cannot reasonably return home (for example because they are not well enough to travel or do not have the means to arrange transport), their circumstances should be discussed with an appropriate health care professional and, if necessary, the local authority. Guests should follow government guidance on dealing with possible or confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. Once the guest has returned to their main residence, they should continue to follow the government guidance on self-isolation, household isolation and social distancing.”
