Over the past few years, one island after another has deployed gangs of workmen to restore traditional paths through the mountains and rugged barrancos, linking villages and traversing remote terrain, signposting and waymarking routes, installing map-boards and creating an incredibly versatile trail network for walkers. These include day-walks and long-distance walks, such as the island-hopping GR 131.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canaries, offering routes for all abilities, including the high altitude of Mount Teide. Its neighbours La Gomera and El Hierro have rocky, volcanic terrain and beautiful pine forests, with routes throughout. Our guides to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are in the making so watch this space.
