Known as the Land of Ice and Fire due to its freezing temperatures and active volcanoes, Iceland is a paradise for walkers and trekkers. With it's spectacular gisas and waterfalls, as well as frozen glaciers and rugged mountains, it is a very varied destination, with countless trails from the simple to the challenging and remote. Iceland's most popular route is the Laugavegur Trail, and while our guidebook does include this route, it also opens the door to many lesser-explored areas or this fascinating country.

Another country with a well-known long distance trek is Greenland, and the Arctic Circle Trail. This is a fully waymarked route, but not for the faint-hearted, with vast empty landscapes and few other hikers for company. Nevertheless, well-spaced mountain huts mean you are not completely confined to your tent, and such a wild country has some truly awesome scenery.
