The opportunity to join a small team, in a busy production environment with exposure to printed and digital content and workflows.
Cicerone Press is based on the edges of the English Lake District We are a 12-person entrepreneurially managed business, publishing multi-award winning guides for walkers, trekkers, mountaineers and cyclists guides in the UK and internationally. Our guides are sold worldwide through general and specialist outlets and online. With a range of over 330 titles, Cicerone is a leader in its field. Following a period of intensive digital development, Cicerone is now publishing a range of printed and digital versions, all driven by an integrated XML workflow.
The role is accountable to the Editorial Manager, but will engage with all areas of this small team including those outside the direct production process in operations, marketing, sales and IT.
Working closely with authors, freelance copy editors, marketing colleagues and designers to bring together great guides at the highest standards.
Managing new guides, new edition projects and updates from pre-publication through complete life cycle including manuscript and materials receipt, editorial, design, production (print and digital) and post-production.
Supporting, improving and developing the editorial process, systems and standards.
Edit or prepare marketing resources for all on and off-line purposes, integrating with marketing and bibliographic needs.
The Production Editor will be a disciplined person, able to work independently on a range of projects at the same time. You will need excellent communication skills, and to be highly organised to handle the range of projects we work on, often running concurrently. An inbuilt need to hit quality standards and deadlines is a must.
As a specialist publisher a passion for our field of outdoor activities will also be very helpful, and stand you in good stead in making editorial judgements as well as in building relationships with the many different authors you will be working with.
Given our subject matter, the ability to work with text, photographs and illustrations and maps and integrate them into coherent guides is a key skill. Visual as well as language skills are important.
The production process at Cicerone is strongly digital with an XML-first approach and closely integrated with design and eBook and content/mobile creation. An understanding of these processes would be great to have although it can be readily picked up and in the long haul this will be a key requirement for success in the role.
It is likely that you have either previous publishing experience or have demonstrated your commitment through post-graduate development.
