Notes on maps
The maps in this guide are basic sketch maps which show the difference between the land and the sea, and show which parts of the routes are on paths, roads or along the shore. These maps need to be used alongside the appropriate Ordnance Survey maps. Maps in the Republic of Ireland are published by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland, while in Northern Ireland they are published by the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland. The entire coastline is covered by 1:50,000 scale maps. The Discovery Series in the Republic of Ireland and Discoverer Series in Northern Ireland are numbered according to an all-Ireland index. The Aran Islands off the western coast are covered by a 1:25,000 scale OS map. The appropriate sheet numbers for all maps needed are given in the introductions to each of the routes. There are 39 maps covering the coast out of the full quota of 89 maps in the 1;50,000 Discovery/Discoverer Series.
