Slovenia offers a wealth of walking, trekking and mountain biking possibilities, not least in the renowned Julian Alps. Croatia also offers plenty of scope for hikers, on rugged mountains and Adriatic islands. The Balkan countries of Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo are equally beautiful, where soaring mountains are slashed by deep gorges. Many areas feel relatively untouched by the modern world, but with new trails opening up, you can be sure of a warm welcome from the locals, far from the popular resorts on the Adriatic coast.
