Switzerland contains some of Europe’s finest walking and trekking among the most dramatic and challenging of all the Alpine ranges. The Bernese Oberland, Eiger, Jungfrau, Matterhorn and Zermatt are justly famous, but away from the crowds lie valleys almost untouched by modern life, crystal-clear lakes reflecting magical peaks and welcoming mountain inns, in a landscape uncompromisingly carved by great glaciers. Great trails such as Chamonix–Zermatt and the Alpine Pass Route explore the mountain regions.
