WHY THIS BOOK?

This book is aimed at people who, for whatever reason, spend lots of their leisure time in the outdoors – people like ourselves and our friends, who generally eat well, without being obsessive about it. We’re a fairly fit bunch, but few would describe themselves as ‘serious’ athletes. We’re just your average outdoorsy types who enjoy a good day out followed by a good feed. We enjoy a variety of sports, such as running, kayaking, walking, climbing, mountain biking and so on, but also spend a lot of time just hanging out, in campsites and in pubs. We don’t imagine this is anything unusual. There are thousands of folk like us who enjoy a spectrum of outdoor activities. So the focus of this book is very broad.

A large part of the inspiration for this book came from Amy’s sister, Nicola Hayes. It was Nic’s idea to write a recipe book that would inspire campers, in particular youngsters, to try something other than noodles and other just-add-water menus. The scope of the book has grown since then to become our take on how to eat and live well, outside.

If you’re a novice camper, we hope we can help you avoid some common mistakes and enjoy your first experiences enough to want to keep doing it! If you already have a bit of experience, you’ll probably know that there is always something new to learn about the outdoors, and there should be plenty here for you too. You might be planning a trip, or thinking of entering a competitive event or outdoor challenge such as walking a long distance footpath, taking part in an adventure race or doing a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition. Or you might just fancy a family holiday without the restrictions of package deals or guest house rules. Whatever your reason for camping we hope you find it as fun and fulfilling as we do.

There’s no need for anyone to read this book from cover to cover – although you’re welcome to do so! The structure of the book should make it easy to dip in and out for whatever bits are useful to you. You’ll find that what you need to know changes over time, as the way most people enjoy the outdoors evolves over the years, incorporating different sporting activities and styles of camping.
