Cicerone App FAQs
What is the Cicerone app?
The Cicerone App is your on-trail companion: GPS-enabled maps, route information and planning tools from our guidebooks, built for use on the move. Browse and buy guides directly in the app, then follow expert-curated routes, explore local landmarks and points of interest, and check facilities information as you go. Get the app on the Apple App Store or Google Play.
If I already have the guidebook, do I need the app as well?
The printed or eBook versions contain all the route information you need. However, the app offers the convenience of GPS navigation and interactive maps for all your guidebooks, wherever you are. Use it alongside your printed guide or eBook to enjoy both the detail of a book and the ease of digital navigation, or use it alone as your digital guide on the trail.
Do I need the app to access my eBooks?
No, you do not need the Cicerone app to access your eBook. You will need an eReader app such as Google Play or Apple Books. For full details on downloading and accessing your eBook, see the eBook FAQs.
Which devices is the app compatible with?
The app is compatible with most modern smartphones running iOS or Android. Specific version requirements are listed in the app store.
Is the app free to download?
The app is free to download, and routes are available to purchase within the app. Once purchased, they’ll appear in your app, ready to download and use on your device.

What mapping does the app use?
The Cicerone app uses the Outdoor and Satellite maps from MapBox as its base maps. Overlaid on the map, our expert authors have curated accommodation, essential services, public transport and a whole host of points of interest. Along with very detailed route lines, you can navigate a trail in confidence with the Cicerone app.
What’s the difference between app access and GPX files?
App access and GPX files are two different ways of using Cicerone content.
- App access gives you key parts of the guidebook within the Cicerone app, including GPS-enabled mapping and facilities.
- GPX files are separate downloads that contain route tracks. These are designed to be used in third-party apps or GPS devices.
GPX files are not included in app access and do not appear in the Cicerone app. Likewise, downloading the app will not give you access to GPX files.
How will I know if a new version of the app is available?
Your device will notify you when updates are available through the App Store or Google Play. We would recommend that you keep the app up to date to benefit from new features and improvements.
Can I change the language of the app?
Yes. The app’s interface language follows your device’s system language settings. If you’re unsure how to change this, check your device brand's support pages, as the language can’t be changed in the app.
How do I purchase a Cicerone book to use in the app?
Open the Cicerone app, go to the 'Shop' tab, and buy the guide within the app. It'll appear in your library ready to download.
How do I know if a guidebook is available in the app?
The Cicerone App currently includes a selected range of guidebooks, and we’re adding more titles all the time. To check if a guidebook is available, open the app, and using the 'Shop' tab, search for the guidebook you're looking for. If it doesn't appear, it's likely not available just yet. You can also see which guidebooks are available on our website. On the book page, look out for the 'Available in the Cicerone App' listing underneath 'eBook'.
If you’re unsure, please contact our customer service team at info@cicerone.co.uk, and we’ll be happy to help.
How do I download a book in the app?
After purchasing a book on the Cicerone website, open the app and tap the download icon next to the title. The book will then be available for use on your device, and you can use it offline once you’ve downloaded the maps. The maps are downloaded separately to the books.
Can I access the app/my books on multiple devices?
Yes. You can access your purchased books on multiple devices using the same account. You'll need to download the Cicerone app on that device, then sign in to your account on each device to download your library.
How long can I access my app purchases for?
Your purchases remain available in your account indefinitely. Once you purchase an app book, you can download and use it whenever you like. Unlike eBooks, there isn’t an expiry date.
How do I delete a guidebook from the app?
To free up space, you can remove a downloaded book from your device without losing your purchase. Go to your profile in the app, select ‘Downloads’ and click the delete icon for the title you wish to remove. You can always re-download it later.
How do I restore my purchases if I reinstall the app?
Your routes and guidebooks are linked to your account, so once you’re logged in you can simply tap the download icon next to each title to restore them for offline use.
Can I have a refund for an in-app purchase?
If you purchased a guide within the app on an Apple device, refunds are handled entirely by Apple. Submit a request through Apple's platform (reportaproblem.apple.com), and Apple will evaluate and decide. There's no fixed refund window. Unfortunately, Cicerone has no direct involvement in this and cannot influence Apple's decision.
If you purchased a guide within the App from a Google device:
Within 48 hours of purchase, users can request a refund directly through Google Play and Google will evaluate it.
After that window closes, contact Cicerone and we will issue a refund if this is within our 7-day refund policy for App products.
Where can I provide feedback for the app?
We welcome all your feedback on the Cicerone app. You can contact us at info@cicerone.co.uk, and Matt, Louise or Amie will get back to you. We will share your comments with the wider team and use them to improve our product.
I’ve bought GPX files. Why can’t I see them in the app?
GPX files are not used within the Cicerone app. They need to be downloaded from your account and opened in a compatible mapping app or GPS device.
