This guidebook covers South Lakeland from Grasmere to the Kent Estuary; from the Coniston Fells to Kendal. It is an area rich in variety. There are rugged mountains of hard volcanic rocks where sparkling tarns mirror shapely peaks; the softer scenery of Silurian rocks which create rounded hills now clothed in trees, edging the lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water; and the hills of grey limestone which run from Kendal to the coast. Here you walk on close cropped turf or through delightful woods, with airy views of distant fells and shimmering sea.

The walks are mostly short, yet enough to pleasantly fill a good half day, ideal for day visitors or family walkers. Some longer walks included could be split. It is not a high-fell walking guide, although several of the most popular summits are included. Priority is given to the lower fells, which our experience shows to be as rewarding as their higher brethren.

We have aimed to present a combination of comprehensive coverage, detailed route description and easy-to-follow maps in an interesting way. If you work your way through the walks you will, like us, retain many rich memories of some of England’s most scenic countryside.

We hope you enjoy the walks as much as we have.
