Maps

Maps, Waymarking and Route Description

In many areas the walker may be content to use the 1:50 000 sheets (11⁄4 inches to 1 mile; 2cm to 1km), while the larger scale (21⁄2 inches to 1 mile; 4cm to 1km) with its greater detail may be preferred for more mountainous terrain (where competence in the use of map and compass in poor visibility is particularly required). The map extracts used in this guide (1:50 000) have the ODP marked in orange, alternative ODP routes in blue and diversions from the ODP in purple.

Note Before buying maps, remember that some have an overlap from one to the next, so check which meet your requirements.
