Here at Cicerone it’s our mission to help give people a ‘great time on the hill’. To support us in this mission we are really chuffed our guidebooks are widely available in bricks and mortar shops not just in the UK, but all around the world ready for you to find and plan your next adventure.
We work with a wide range of wonderful independent retailers and I caught up recently with Victoria from George Fisher to find out a bit more...
“Based in Keswick, in the heart of the English Lake District, George Fisher Ltd is one of the UK's leading retailers of outdoor equipment and clothing. The George Fisher building was originally the Abraham's photographic shop, built in 1887 by George Abraham to house his famous photographic business and continued under his illustrious sons George and Ashley, we have many of their iconic images of early mountaineering on display. In 1967 George Fisher acquired the premises and this iconic building became an outdoor equipment store."
We take great pride in our reputation for offering the best customer service and shopping experience in the business and are a regular winner of the Outdoor Industry Association’s 'Outdoor Retailer of the Year' award— Victoria - George Fisher
Our Boot Room is so well respected that people travel from around the UK to have their boots fitted here. We offer a number of unique George Fisher services too, including ski servicing, boot hire, equipment hire and waterproof testing.
Not only are our 40 plus members of staff avid users of the products that we sell here amongst the fells, but they've been around, in terms of years and travelling the world! Between us we have travel, trekking, running, cycling, camping, climbing, sailing & paddling experience in Nepal, Thailand, Yosemite, Patagonia, North America, Chile, Ecuador, Cuba, Greenland, New Zealand, Africa, Australia, Scotland, The Alps, The Dolomites, Bulgaria, Slovenia, The Tatra, all over the UK and many other places, too.
At George Fisher we stock one of the widest ranges of outdoor books in the UK. Customers find guidebooks really useful for informing them of the conditions that they are likely to face on a future trip. This really helps guide their decisions when buying clothing and equipment.
Therefore we have a wide range of walking and travel guides for many areas of the world as well as the UK, which include a comprehensive range of Cicerone titles. Naturally we focus on Lake District guides which you will find in our Ground Floor display, with the rest of our book range on the First Floor. Whether you need to find walks that are more accessible for people with limited mobility, dog friendly pubs and cafes, or new ideas for more challenging walks, we should have you covered. Narrative and biographical books are also very popular; particularly the many signed copies we get of newly launched titles. If you want to learn how to climb, map read or improve some part of your running or cycling, we have books to help you as well.
We stock a wide range of OS maps, from both the Explorer and Landranger titles, including the Active maps which we recommend for their waterproofing and toughness. Maps of key foreign destinations like Everest Basecamp, the European Alps and Patagonia are also kept in stock, and we are happy to try and track down other maps if we don’t have the right one in stock.
Think George Fisher is just an outdoor retailer? Think again!
At the heart of our store, or rather at the top of the shop, with spectacular views, is Abrahams Café, where we use locally sourced produce to create a wide-ranging menu for lunch, tea or just a reviving coffee. Oh, and a lovely piece of cake or a traditional scone! Drop in anytime to relax in our comfortable surroundings.”
