Anyone deciding to walk this route, or any part of it, should take detailed topographical maps. The sketch maps provided in this book are intended as a guide and, due to the limitations of space, can only give an indication of what the route will be like. Having said that, Spanish maps are notoriously unreliable, sometimes putting villages in the wrong place altogether.
The best option is to get the 1:50,000 Servicio Geografico del Ejercito (Spanish Military Survey) maps. These maps are accurate but some are now quite out of date and so may be missing the odd new road. You can buy them very cheaply online from Spain at www.tiendaverde.org or from the UK at www.stanfords.co.uk. Leave at least a month for delivery from both. If you can’t wait that long, you may be able to buy them in person from Stanfords in London (12–14 Long Acre, Covent Garden; call 020 7836 1321 to check stock), The Map Shop in Upton-on-Severn (15 High Street, Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire WR8 0HJ ( 0800 085 40 80) and from Cartográfica del Sur in Madrid (C/Valle Inclán 2, ( 958 204 901).
The maps that you need are listed in order in the introduction to each province and also in the table on page 23.
