The area is flanked to the west by Grasmere, Dunmail Raise and Thirlmere, and to the east by the Kirkstone Pass, Patterdale and Ullswater. Steep western slopes contrast with long dales to the south and east, and the region provides great scope for a wide variety of day walks.
